Building customer loyalty: why oil changes are important

Building customer loyalty in any business is challenging. Getting customers back to the car repair shop is the most difficult task for car owners. If a store can crack this code, they will seize current and future repair and maintenance opportunities. The only inherent opportunity for each vehicle to increase customer loyalty is engine oil and functional fluid services.

In this one-hour webinar, our experts will discuss how they can establish oil change and vehicle maintenance plans to maintain customer return rates and help maintain healthy profit margins.

Below are 4 tips to follow when replacing the starter and alternator.

It may not be known exactly how many, but due to misdiagnosis, too many starters are replaced every year. Have you replaced good rotating electrical components unnecessarily because of a mistake? The following are some important tips for diagnosing new vehicle starters.

Damage to the ignition switch, opening of the parking/neutral safety switch, or opening of the clutch pedal safety switch may result in a no-crank condition. It may even be caused by the failure of the anti-theft system or the security system due to the remote key failure. Use the scanning tool to confirm the ECM input.

On newer vehicles, the starter may not be directly connected to the ignition switch or start button. The command to start the engine may pass through two or more modules before energizing the control side of the relay, which drives the solenoid on the starter. This is why finding wiring diagrams is essential to your diagnostic strategy for new vehicles.

Replace the relay in the fuse box to see if it can solve the crankless situation. This is a trick of an old mechanic. If the relay or starter circuit is shorted to ground or power, this may damage the ECM or power management module. The module usually contains a transistor driver on the main circuit board, which is connected to the control side of the relay. If the relay is replaced, the relay or module may be damaged. This method may also give uncertain results. What is the best way? Use a scanning tool that can control the start relay in both directions.

Most new vehicles have three to five computer networks. The modules on these networks communicate with each other by turning the power on and off in a specific pattern. The voltage is usually switched between zero and seven volts.

If the battery is low or the starter consumes too much current, the system voltage may drop below 7 volts and interrupt the network in the vehicle. When this happens, the ECM will close, the injector will not spray, and the ignition coil will not ignite.

You can use an oscilloscope to record the system voltage or use a min/max function instrument cluster to perform this test. In addition, communication and system voltage loss codes will be set in multiple modules.
