The Friday morning news report that Joni Mitchell had died was published in mistake; the singer-songwriter is still alive and doing well.

A spokeswoman for Rhino, which is collaborating with Mitchell on an ongoing series of reissues of her catalogue, stated, “I can certify that everything is fine and that this was done in error.”

People magazine unintentionally published an obituary that had been “pre-written” – the greatest fear of every major news outlet. “Joni Mitchell Dies at TK AGE,” ran the headline on the magazine’s website and in a tweet, with “TK” standing for “to come” in journalistic lingo. The narrative itself also includes editorial annotations suggesting missing information.

Although the piece was quickly removed from the Internet, it did give rise to rumours among Mitchell’s supporters that he had, in fact, passed away and that People just pulled the story to confirm its accuracy before republishing it. According to the representative, there was no reason for the momentary fear other than a finger pressing the wrong button.

Since suffering a ruptured brain aneurysm in 2015, Mitchell has been largely absent from the public spotlight. However, in recent months, she has made more strong public appearances. She has subsequently regained the ability to walk and is a frequent party host at her house in central California, where “Joni jams” are a common, private occurrence.
