The new EQD Special Cranker offers players some super gritty tones and yet manages to retain the nuances and dynamics of your playing. Offering both Germanium and Silicon clipping diodes. It also works equally well on bass and synths too.
This latest EarthQuaker Devices overdrive pedal is called the Special Cranker and it can certainly dish out the dirt. It follows on from the company’s last dirt pedal, the Hizumitas Fuzz Sustainar, which was a huge hit with pedal geeks. Though this time we have an overdrive pedal with an almost amp-like preamp style gain structure. This is expanded by having both Germanium and Silicon clipping options to hand.
Special Cranker offers germanium and silicon clipping
The control layout is that magical combination of super easy to understand, and lots of great tonal options to hand. The Special Cranker has three basic knobs labelled Level, More and Tone. With More adding gain as it is turned clockwise. It actually changes the bias of the transistor and so will get a little noisier at extreme settings. Then Tone offers more highs as you push it clockwise, and accentuates lower frequencies when turned counterclockwise. With a flat response around the 3 o’clock mark.
Finally, you have the diode switch, with Germanium on the left side. This offers a softer and more transparent drive tone. Then Silicon on the right for a brighter more aggressive drive tone.
The pedal will run from 9-18V via an external power supply and offers the standard EQD Flexi-Switch. This enables you to go from standard latching operation like normal, or momentary latching for quick bursts of the effect.
I have zero complaint about his effect and for only $99, I think it is a steal. Check out the video demo below to hear it in action. I’m really liking it on the bass part of the demo, and also its works very well with the drums during the latter half of the video. This is a no brainer for me, as it appears to be very versatile, affordable and well thought out. Nice one EQD!
